Naturally Healing Uterine Fibroids

Did you know studies have shown that by age 50, 70% of Caucasian women and 80% of African American women had fibroids? 30% of all women get fibroids by age 35. Each year more than 200,000 hysterectomies are performed for uterine fibroids, with an annual health care cost exceeding $2.1 billion dollars.

Studies have shown that fibroid growth rates are similar for both African American and Caucasian women, however, as women get older the growth rate was shown to decline in Caucasian women but not African American women. It also showed that among women receiving reproductive assistance, treatments were less successful for African Americans, who were more likely to have fibroids, than their Caucasian counterparts.

Now, there have been many surveys and studies done in researching the variables between races, some showing that economic statuses played a factor in how fibroids grew and responded to treatment in the body. If we look at food quality/availability alone, there’s no mystery in the variables but that is a whole topic of discussion on its own. What we will focus on is the root cause of uterine fibroids and how to treat them!  

Not all women with fibroids have symptoms and those who do find them hard to live with, as many experience pain and heavy menstrual bleeding. Fibroids can put pressure on the bladder causing frequent urination and the rectum causing rectal pressure. Should they become large, they can cause the abdomen to enlarge making a woman look pregnant.

Types of Fibroids:

  1. Submucosal fibroid – This fibroid is not as common as the other fibroids. It develops in the middle muscle or myometrium layer of your uterus.
  2. Subserosal Fibroid – A Subserosal fibroid grows outside the uterus wall known as serosa. It can grow up to the extent that can make your womb appear bigger from one side.
  3. Pedunculated Fibroid – A subserosal fibroid can develop a stem which is a tender base to support the tumor, it is called as a pedunculated fibroid.
  4. Intramural fibroid – This is the most common type of fibroid. It appears inside the muscular wall of the uterus. This fibroid can grow larger stretching your womb.


Symptoms may vary depending on the size of the tumor, its location, and the number of tumors you have. If your fibroid is very small or you’ve gone through menopause, you may not have any symptoms and the fibroids may shrink. Both progesterone and estrogen cause the uterine lining to regenerate in each menstrual cycle, in turn stimulating the grown of fibroids, so if you have gone through menopause, these hormones are drastically reduced, which in turn stops the growth stimulation.

Other symptoms may include:

  • Pain in the lower back or pelvis
  • Heavy bleeding with clots during your periods.
  • Long lasting menstrual period
  • Increase in menstrual cramps
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Increase in urination
  • Fullness or pressure in power abdomen
  • Swollen abdomen

Symptom remedies

  • Yoga
  • Acupuncture
  • GFLT (Gui Zhi Fu Ling Tang) a traditional Chinese formula (promotes blood circulation to remove blood stasis and manly used to support healthy gynecological function.
  • Heat (such as heating pads) to reduce cramping

Dietary changes

This is the second most important part of healing fibroids, first is detoxing the body (see our other articles on detoxing). Once you’ve cleaned out your temple, it’s important to put the right things back in. Foods containing high amounts of flavonoids such as green tea and green leafy vegetables, is essential!

Herbal remedies:

Red Raspberry leaf is used to control menstrual bleeding and menstrual symptoms related to fibroids; it also helps provide strength to the uterine muscle. It contains nutrients such as potassium, calcium, iron, phosphorous, magnesium, and vitamins A, B, C. Research has also shown that, red raspberry leaf helps to manage the blood sugar levels throughout the month.

Goldenseal Root helps strengthen your immune system and reduces the inflammation of the uterus. This is very helpful in treating fibroids because it reduces inflammation and keeps your uterus tissue healthy. It contains berberine compound, which helps in toning the tissue of the uterus wall and in turn decreases the size of the fibroid. *This herb should not be taken if you are pregnant or lactating

Black Cohosh Root helps regulate menstrual bleeding. It also helps stimulate uterine relaxation and prevent menses. It supports the functions of the female reproductive system, directly affecting the estrogen hormone levels. Black Cohosh also works well for inflammations, liver problems, and menopause. This root is known for its hormone stabilizing ability in women.

Dandelion Root and Leaf aids in the detoxification of blood. It assists in maintaining the hormone levels, reducing estrogen, which again is a major cause of fibroids. Dandelion leaf is rich in minerals and is very nourishing for the body.

Chasteberry, also known as vitex, regulates the pituitary gland and female hormones. This also reduces estrogen levels by increasing progesterone levels, which acts as an excellent remedy. It also helps nourish the endocrine system and enhances the bodies natural ability to balance its hormones. It has also proven to shrink small fibroids.

More herbs to incorporate:


Fights infection through its antimicrobial and antifungal properties, balances female hormones and stimulates the production of hormones that help to maintain uterine health. Can help aid the uterus from abnormalities such as ulcers and tumors. Also helps to stimulate menstrual discharge and ease cramping.


An aromatic and antimicrobial herb, rosemary treats bacterial infection, speeds wound healing, and stimulates menstruation.


Astringent, tonifying and cleansing, yarrow is great for regulating menstrual flow, ovarian cysts and supporting overall uterine health.

Partridge Berry

Revered as a wonderful herb for the female reproductive system, partridge berry can assist with infertility, regulate menstrual cycles and helps decrease severe menstrual pain.


Especially good for depression, loss of memory, and energy cleansing. Sage is great in aiding cramps. It’s is antispasmodic, antibacterial, and antimicrobial. Sage is very relaxing and is also the best to release unwanted energy in the womb. 

Dong qui

A great in aiding with PMS symptoms such as cramps, headaches, mood swings, and bloating. It’s also great in aiding in infertility. Helps produce estrogen meaning it can aid in vaginal dryness. 


Anti-inflammatory and antiseptic. Helps aid with infections, swelling, and can also help with pain in general. Very good herb to aid in UTI’s or other vaginal infections. 


An antispasmodic; really good for menstrual cramps. Tonic and strengthening.

Witch Hazel

An anti-inflammatory, anti-septic, and anti-fungal. Helps improve blood circulation and aids in treatments of infections. 


Astringent, tonifying and cleansing, motherwort strengthens and relaxes uterine muscles, eases uterine cramping, and may help with uterine fibroids. Motherwort also stimulates uterine tone.


One of the most relaxing herbs we have, lavender is antimicrobial, supports healing, and also promotes menstrual flow.


Soothes and aids in healing of scar tissue, vaginal tears, or hemorrhoids.

Rose Petals

A relaxing, uplifting and astringent herb that smells delightful, and softens the skin. It is known as the “vaginal facial”.

Red Raspberry

Toning to the uterine muscles.


An anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic. Helps to ease people with anxiety, insomnia, and depression. Can help aid in reduction of menstrual cramps. 

Himalayan Salt

Helps regulate the blood flow in your body. It’s also great for balancing your ph.


This herb is specifically good for aiding in the reduction of menstrual cramps. Also helps with UTI’s. Anti-spasmodic, and antimicrobial.
